Private Albert Charles FARMER, 266660, Queens Own Royal West Kent  Regiment (Kent Cyclist Battalion, 2746), died at 3.45am on 13th April 1918, age 42.

Born 2nd July 1876?, Deptford, Kent, son of Albert Charles & Marion Elizabeth Farmer.

Husband of Martha Elizabeth Farmer, (nee Hanson?), married 25th December 1910? Resided 33 Bridge Street, Folkestone, Kent.

Enlisted Gravesend, Kent, age 39, single, height 5ft 7 inches, weight 137lbs, lower molars deficient. Resided 9 Garrick Street, Gravesend, Kent. Formerly transport worker.

12th December 1915, enlisted; 13th December 1915, to Army Reserve; 21st August 1916, mobilized; 22nd August 1916, posted Kent Cyclist Battalion; 26th December 1917 to 20th February 1918, Military Hospital, Shorncliffe; 21st February 1918 to 23rd February 1918, Bevan Military Hospital, Sandgate, Kent; 23rd February 1918, discharged to Duty; 26th March 1918, to 13th April 1918, Military Hospital, Shorncliffe, Kent. Died 13th April 1918.

23rd April 1918, discharged  as "no longer physically fit for War Service" due to sickness. Silver War Badge issued

Pension 27/6 a week from 24th April 1918 to 23rd July 1918, conditional. Treatment suggested, convalescent home. Pension cancelled as man has died. Disability 100%, fractured skull.


27th April 1918, report from Lieutenant Colonel Commanding 2/1st Kent Cyclist Battalion - In accordance with Kings Regulations 1872 sub. section 5, I have to report as follows on the death of No.266660 Pte. Farmer A.C.

1. Army Form B2090 in duplicate was forwarded to the War Office under this office No. B404/ 674 dated the 14th inst.

2. The above soldier met with an accident on the 25th December 1917 when on duty and employed at the Canteen by falling down the cellar stairs at 24 Grimston Gardens, Folkestone. He fractured the base of his skull and was admitted to Shorncliffe Military Hospital on 26th December 1917, by order of the Medical Officer of this Unit, Dr W J Tysen. He died on the 13th April 1918 at Shorncliffe Military Hospital.

3. An inquest was held on the 16th April 1918 by the Deputy County Coroner, of East Kent, Mr Mewll, at Shorncliffe Military Hospital and the following verdict in accordance with the medical evidence was given:- "Deceased died from Meningitis (septic), the result of a fall."
