Educated at Hazelhurst, Frant, Sussex; Marlborough College, Wiltshire and Oriel College, Oxford.

26th August 1914, Gazetted Second Lieutenant, 6th Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment; 1st January 1916, promoted Lieutenant; attached to 1st Garrison Battalion, The Bedfordshire Regiment; from January 1916, served in India; February 1917, invalided to England and on recovery transferred to the 3rd (Reserve), Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, Kent & Leysdown, Isle of Sheppey; subsequently at his own request was sent to France 9th August 1918.

The Colonel of the 3rd (Reserve), Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, wrote: "He was one of the finest boys I have met for years, a keen and most capable soldier, untiring at his work, but never shirked, but ever asked fore employment. In addition he studied his profession, and had he been spared would have gone far in the service. Apart from his professional ability, I greatly admired his character, frank and upright to a degree, and although one of the most cheery lads, a brilliant sportsman, yet I ever noted his God fearing conduct in his mode of life, " and his Major: "Like his brother Frank, he had the heart of a lion, knew no fear, and lived up to the highest ideals of an officer. He fell leading his men - his only place - on 27th September 1918."
