Lance Corporal Tom Rowe LEWIS, G/28559, 7th   Battalion,  Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment, (formerly M/321675, R.A.S.C.M.T.),   killed in action, St Emilie, Flanders, France, 18th September 1918, age 19.

Born 27th February 1899, Ynysybwl, Glamorganshire / Barry, Wales, enlisted  May 1917, Grove Park, Kent. Formerly Clerk at National Provincial Bank, Barry, Wales.

Eldest Son of Edgar Aman Lewis and Martha Jane Lewis, (daughter of Thomas Watts, Civil Engineer of Swansea), of "Cartref," Ynysybwl, Glamorganshire. 

Educated Pontypridd Intermediate School

Served with the Expeditionary Force France & Flanders from May 1918.

A comrade wrote: "He fell gloriously in action. We could ill afford to lose him, being a smart and popular lad with all. He was promoted on the Field, having shown himself a leader of the first order. He had been continuously in action since 8th August, inspiring all by his good humour, cheerfulness and courage. He was deeply admired, respected and loved by all."


Commemorated at Vis-en-Artois Memorial, Panel 7, France.
