Born Dunton Green, Sevenoaks, Kent, enlisted 13th May 1913, Maidstone, Kent, age 18, height 5ft 2 inches, weight 106lbs, resided 11 Moor Road, Sevenoaks, Kent / 16 Surrey Terrace, Crampton Road, Sevenoaks, Kent. Formerly gardener.

Son of Richard & Nellie McCarthy. 11 Moor Road, Sevenoaks, Kent. Brothers, Henry McCarthy; Edward McCarthy; Alfred McCarthy; Arthur McCarthy.

Home, 13th May 1913 to 21st April 1915; BEF, 22nd April 1915 to 31st July 1916; Home, 1st August 1916 to 5th February 1917.

13th May 1913 to 12th October 1913, posted 3rd Battalion, Special Reserve, Royal West Kent Regiment; 5th August 1914, mobilized; 22nd April 1915, posted 1st Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 19th May 1916, appointed unpaid Lance Corporal; 22nd July 1916, wounded, gun shot wound, left thigh; 31st July 1916, posted Depot, Royal West Kent Regiment; 9th January 1917, 2nd Western General Hospital, Whitworth Street, Manchester.

5th February 1917, discharged  as "no longer physically fit for War Service" due to wounds. Silver War Badge issued.
