9th November 1914, Worthing, Sussex, enlisted 2/4th (Home Service) Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, Service No.2654, apparent age 17 years & 7 months, height 5ft 5 inches;  4th September 1915, posted 72nd Provisional Battalion;

18th February 1916, letter from Herbert W Sandell, (Builder, decorator, contractor & furnishing undertaker, all kinds of blinds manufactured at the above workshops, gas fitter & hot water engineer, carpets beaten & relaid, windows cleaned, Agent for Guardian Assurance Company), 80 & 82, Chapel Road, Worthing, Sussex - "Dear Sir, I want to claim my son Lionel Weller Sandell, age 16 years last birthday No.2654 D Company of the 72nd Provisional Battalion for which purpose I enclose, his birth certificate. Would you kindly send me any forms that may be necessary to be filled in or any other information that will be useful to me for this purpose apologising for troubling you and hoping for an early reply."

25th February 1916, discharged after 1 years & 109 days, having made a mis-statement as to age on enlistment; On discharge age 16 years & 10 months, height 5ft 7 inches, fair complexion, blue eyes, light brown hair; intended place of residence 80, Chapel Road, Worthing, Sussex.

Field Ambulance, diarrhoea; 12th June 1918, Wisques, New Zealand Stationary Hospital, diarrhoea; 30th June 1918, Wisques, New Zealand Stationary Hospital, trench fever; 3rd July 1918, Boulogne, 7 Stationary Hospital, PUO Trench Fever; 12th July 1918, discharged to Duty; 18th July 1918, rejoined Battalion, In the Field; 6th August 1918, offence 20th May 1918, neglect to the prejudice of good order & military discipline in that he did not take proper precautions in removing round from breach of his Lewis Gun before cleaning it causing the wounding of a comrade No.21.08, Pte G H Dawkins, deprived of Lance stripe for misconduct; 5th September 1918, appointed unpaid Lance Corporal.
