Corporal Walter Harvey BATTEN, G/470, 6th  Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment,  killed in action, Flanders, France,  9th April 1917.

Born Over near Chichester, Sussex, son of Elizabeth Sarah Batten, The Village, Hayes, Kent.

Enlisted  Bromley, Kent, age 19, height 5ft 7 inches, weight 132lbs. Formerly chaffeur.

30th August 1914, enlisted; 2nd September 1914, posted 6th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 26th November 1914, appointed unpaid Lance Corporal; 20th August 1915, appointed paid Lance Corporal; 1st June 1915, posted BEF; 12th December 1915, not complying with an order, reprimanded; 25th February 1916, appointed Acting Corporal; 1st June 1916, promoted Corporal; 3rd July 1916, wounded; 4th July1916, admitted 11 General Hospital, Rouen; 6th July1916, to England, per Hospital Ship, Lanfranc, gun shot wound right shoulder, right buttock; 8th July 1916 to 12th July 1916, General Hospital, Manchester, shrapnel wounds, right forearm & right buttock; 21st July 1916, posted 3rd Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 8th November 1916, Fort Horsted, absent from Tattoo until 10.10pm same date, admonished; 10th December 1916, Fort Horsted, overstaying his pass whilst under orders for a draft from midnight until 9.30am on 11th, reprimanded; 18th December 1916, embarked / disembarked; 19th December 1916, posted 6th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment; 8th January 1917, joined Battalion, "C" Company.
